Easter weekend is almost upon us. Whether you choose to go to church, decorate your home with rabbits, chicks and eggs or eat chocolate in your pyjamas, the Easter period is exciting for kids. The precious public holidays bestowed upon us during the Easter period allows families to spend quality time together and create special memories.
When I recall Easter as a child I remember the smell of roast lamb, impatiently wriggling around on a church pew and, of course, chocolate eggs. Lots and lots of chocolate eggs. Each one packaged in its very own elaborate box and stacked upon one another. Chocolate eggs, towers of them. Columns of vivid colours, beckoning me to discover their secret treasure hidden within. I would devour them, indulge until my stomach ached. It was marvellous!
As a mother it no longer seems marvellous. Large pillars of chocolate now summon up images of hyper kids and rotten teeth. I have been considering the alternatives.
Arts and crafts are a big hit in our house at the moment so egg painting, rolling or hunting could be a goer. My girls love bunnies in any form (except in pies or stews) so some kind of toy or trinket in this form is a no brainer. However the question still remains: Can I really let the Easter Bunny forget the chocolate?
If I’m really honest then the answer is no. There will be chocolate in our home this Easter. Hopefully no towers, no stomach aches, a reasonable amount. However it will be there, the Easter Bunny will bring enticing, exciting, elaborately decorated chocolate eggs. After all the idea of Easter without chocolate is like imagining Wham! without George Michael, Bert without Ernie, cheese without wine, it just wouldn't be as good.
